GR fitness has transitioned to an unmanned gym. For me this fundamentally changed the service. CCTV is not a substitute for actual staff. The gym itself is still adequate. But given the massive change in the service it provides I no longer felt it was the gym I joined. I didn’t feel comfortable and secure going there. Having staff onsite to help with form and technique is hugely important to me and I felt the lack of staff a lot. Since the transition there have been power cuts, non members allowed in, water leaks and equipment left untidy. If there is any injury or any other incident the cameras won’t help in the moment. When I and others have raised this the concerns were dismissed. The management’s communications via emails are almost always snide, passive aggressive and dismissive. They’ve named members of staff in emails they’ve felt have let them down. They’ve quoted private emails from members that raised concerns and labelled these unprofessional and unwarranted. I totally lost faith in the management over those last months.
*** EDIT 01/10/24**** So I did have a student membership which was £24 a month which has now been revoked as I’ve graduated, which is fair enough. However, the normal cost of this gym is £40 a month for a rolling contract, which is just ridiculous for the quality of the gym. So two stars off the review and honestly, I would recommend you find another gym anywhere else to go to instead. ************ I’ve been going to this gym for about 3 years now and here’s a full breakdown of pros and cons. Pros: - Staff are really friendly and happy to help with exercises and correcting form. - The equipment, although old, is diverse and plenty of secondary equipment for more popular machines. - Cost. It’s fairly reasonable to cheap with some student deals on. - Staff regularly wipe down the machines. Cons: - Cleanliness. This place has a massive problem with mould (what looks like black) all around and there doesn’t seem to be much effort to clean it up or stop it coming back. - The music. Like all gym playlists it’s a bit rubbish, however, the real problem is the volume. You can easily hear it through inner ear headphones and to be honest, it’s just incredible annoying. - Facilities. Toilets and showers are very grim, do not use if you can avoid it. Overall, I go to this gym because it’s very close to my home and it does have some good things. You may be better heading somewhere else though if the cons above put you off.
Just started I’m very much enjoying it going 6 times a week. There’s a wide range of equipment and the staff are very friendly much better than my last gym.
The gym is decent. Good range of equipment. I quite like the wide range of dumbbell weights available. Off peak experience and membership price is very good. I’ve not really spoken to the staff, as I haven’t needed to, but they seem friendly enough from what I’ve seen. Equipment is well maintained. Everyone puts weights back where they belong (major plus) Few things I think could be better. The pull up bars are terribly located - I’m either at risk of hitting my head, hitting the wall or plates with my feet or having to do pull ups in a squat rack. There is way too much equipment in some areas. It’s like they’ve bought new equipment and not sold the old stuff or just went on a crazy gym machine spending spree. It can get in the way of movement and use. The music has been almost constant DnB. Please change it up.
Staff are all very friendly and helpful. Gym is well kept and new bits of equipment are frequently added. Whatever your training style this gym will have something for you, couldn’t recommend enough!
